Compiled by William N. Simmons 9364 Gail Drive Baton Rouge, LA 70809 (504) 293-3348 March 31, 1995 EXTRACTS FROM NORTH CAROLINA Who were the parents of Gabriel Allen? How do the Allens relate to the Sugg(s)? What is the relationship of Cheryl’s Gabriel Allen and Bill & Betty’s Gabriel Allen? It is hopeful that through study of these extractions from the vicinity of Edgecombe County, North Carolina and others we come across and add to it; as well as the information we have on hand, we can make some connections and piece together some semblance of family from some of them. Through these efforts possibly we can answer the questions above. In the process of compiling this, we have discovered information which almost concludes that the parents of Gabriel Allen (born NC ca 1750-1755) were Jacob Allen and Priscilla ( ? ). We also feel fairly certain that this Jacob Allen and Richard Allen were brothers (a will states as much). We think this Richard Allen might be the father of Cheryl’s Richard Allen who was the father of her Gabriel Allen (born ca 1812 TN). But there is much more needed to confirm and more of these people need to be connected in order to find the other links and connection with the family Sugg. Undoubtedly, there are further Allen/Sugg connections to be found in Tennessee though I think we need to start in North Carolina where these connections initially began. I will start with some general information and such. Have fun! The Will of PRISCILLA JOHNSTON in 1771 establishes the mother of GABRIEL ALLEN, CHARLES ALLEN, and MERRYMAN ALLEN. It also shows a daughter, MARY WILLIAMS and a grandson, HARDEE MAUN(D). Whether or not Mary is a sister of the Allens we cannot be certain at this time. Williams could be her married name or she may have been from an earlier marriage of Priscilla. This may also be the case with grandson HARDEE MAUN(D) or he might have been the son of a daughter who earlier had died. In the absence of the will of their father or further information at this time, we should not exclude the possibility that there may have been more children than we see here (as others may have received their share earlier if they were older children. In other words, we can take little for granted. To begin, let's look at GABRIEL JOHNSTON, one time Governor of NC in its very early days when still a providence. His will in 1751 (he died about 1753) shows him with a wife FRANCES, a daughter PENELOPE, and a niece named PENELOPE. He names a HENRY JOHNSTON (in school at the time, doesn't specify what relation he is but I think a brother) and Henry's sister CAROLINA JOHNSTON, and a sister ELIZABETH SMEAR. He names his brother SAMUEL JOHNSTON's sons: SAMUEL,[Jr] and JOHN JOHNSTON. (The niece Penelope above was their sister). He doesn't leave his brother SAMUEL JOHNSON anything for fear he'll lose it to his debtors. -- His widow FRANCIS married a JNO. RUTHERFORD several years after his death. (All in all he had owned about 35,000 acres of land and numerous plantations in a number of different counties). In 1756 his brother SAMUEL JOHNSTON left will naming the two sons above (SAMUEL and JOHN) and daughters JEAN, PENELOPE, ISOBELL, ANN, and HANNAH. Anyway, in our search for a PRISCILLA JOHNSTON we might bear these in mind though I have found no connection as yet with her to this family. Also note different in spelling of JOHNSON/JOHNSTON. I believe the PRISCILLA JOHNSTON (or JOHNSON) I list are the same person but don't know which spelling is correct. From BIBLE RECORDS OF EARLY EDGECOMBE COUNTY, N.C. by Williams 975.646), and I quote: ESTHER MAUND JOHNSTON, widow of Col. JONAS JOHNSTON, "a hero of the Revolution," died in Edgecombe County on January 19, 1841, aged 89 years. She was born in Norfolk County, Va., married about 1768 at the home of AQUILLA SUGG near Tarboro, [N.C.] and was widowed with five small children in 1779. Colonel JOHNSTON took part in several expeditions against the British and Tories, and died on his way home after the battle. "Col. JOHNSTON was robust in person, active, capable of bearing much fatigue, vigilant and brave as an officer, and high minded and honorable as a man; which, joined to a mind distinguished for its strength and fortitude, rendered him an invaluable auxiliary in defense of the liberty of his country." (January 30, 1841) Jonas J. Carr, Executor, advertised her personal property for sale on February 6, 1841. [End quote; JONAS JOHNSTON born VA 1740 - died 1779]. And the next entry following: HENRY JOHNSTON's estate was being administered by WILLIAM NORFLEET, according to the issue of December 12, 1840. This Henry may have been a nephew of the above GOV. GABRIEL JOHNSTON. WILLIAM NORFLEET was an official or some sort, we see this name frequently on some of the wills and deeds of this area. We also find AQUILLA SUGG frequently in NC (this name found at times as Aquila Sugg(s) but the same). We also find him in Tenn. in association with the ALLENs and where he gives some land for a church- (I may have said earlier that he was a minister but now I don't think so). Finding Aquilla Sugg in NC at an early date would suggest that there were two or three by that name, perhaps a son and maybe a grandson. Scotty has informed me now that he has found ten different Aquillas. Why would anyone name a kid Aquilla? Course it’s somewhat better than the Fetus Cain I came across (if that’s the correct spelling¾might have been Festus). Aquilla Sugg (one of them anyway) was a Clerk of Court in NC, one was a Justice of the Peace there and others appear to have been merchants or held some official capacity. We know that there were connections between the SUGGs, JOHNSTONs, ALLENs, and MAUNDs- but where are these connections? Who was PRISCILLA JOHNSTON?? Who was the father of GABRIEL ALLEN?? Tentatively, we think that the father of GABRIEL ALLEN was a JACOB ALLEN but need more confirmation of this than we have at present. Hopefully, we can come up with the answers to this as well as a few others through these abstracts. Though it might appear that I am trying to link up with Colonial royalty so to speak, I include the above because of the time frame as well as some similarities with names. Perhaps they may have been connected in some way but I am inclined to believe that any relationship more than likely took place after the death of GABRIEL ALLEN’s father. I have a feeling though that the ALLENS and JOHNSTONS were associated with one another in some way before his death. I have drug this out to the point that I must bring it to a close and get it in your hands as I have found that I could continuously add to it for the next ten years as other data is uncovered. As we continue to find new information we can add it at its proper place. I have not been consistent in my format throughout the document but you should be able to make some sense out of it hopefully. The absence of information generally indicates that names omitted did not seem important enough to mention. * * * Please note that the boundaries of the counties in North Carolina, much like those of other states, have shifted numerous times over the years. Hence, this can cause much confusion in trying to place people in a certain county at a given time. I will not try to explain all of this other than in the following. I have also enclosed a map which may be of some benefit. Unfortunately it does not include all the place names that we might search for. In the beginning there was Colonial Bertie County, one of the thirteen original Precincts of NC in 1738. Edgecombe Precinct had been formed from Bertie in 1732 and Edgecombe County was established in 1741 (taken from Bertie County) with Tarboro as its county seat. Later Edgecombe was broken into: Granville, part of Person Co., Vance Co., Warren Co., Franklin, Nash, Halifax, and a part of Wilson Co. Over the years these boundaries have changed many times. Going a little further with this, records indicate that Edgecombe court of the early 1730s was probably held from place to place at plantations within Edgecombe. In the late 1730s and early 1740s, there seems to have been a courthouse of sorts near what is now Tillery, NC. By about the mid 1740s, the Edgecombe County courthouse at Enfield was in use. Early in 1759, when Halifax County was formed from a part of Edgecombe and the limit of Halifax County was set, one boundary was and still is Fishing Creek which flows just below Enfield. The Edgecombe County courthouse was then within the new County of Halifax. For this reason deeds in the Halifax County, NC public registry prior to 1759 call for lands within the huge area that Edgecombe covered in its very early days. So we must search the surrounding counties as well since records were not always kept where we might expect them. Likewise, I feel certain that I have not exhausted all avenues of search in this area. From the above, please do not think me all knowing, for I am not. I must give credit to Margaret M. Hofmann, author of Abstracts of Deeds, Edgecombe County, N.C. 1732 - 1758, and taken from that source. I've put these excerpts together in chronological order (if the date is indicative of anything-- some entries of earlier dates were found in later books) to give us an idea of the movements of these associated people. I have a number of records from Anson Co. but will keep as a separate list and file (Filename ANSON.DAT) since the counties are not that close to each other and may indicate a migration. In my efforts to place these excerpts in order I may have entered some information under the wrong publication. If any questions arise, let me know and I'll refer back to my original notes. I have tried to key in on certain people whose names seem to show up in the company of others, as well as noting locations of lands through description and the people that owned or lived near there. On occasion, you might find an individual that would seem to have no bearing on any of this, but at the time I thought of a possible link. Surely before this search is over, a large majority of the people entered here can be discounted. Hopefully, I have not included so large a group that it becomes too confusing. At some point I hope to put together some of the similarities of names I have found, as well as some associations of people that perhaps may not have been related but were often found together. Given the area in which these people lived, it’s possible that they did not all migrate from Virginia. Though there was an overland route from Virginia, it’s possible that many of them arrived in America at ports near Plymouth on the Roanoke River, near Greenville on the Tarr River, or at New Bern on the Neuse River. I need to explore this avenue (which I know nothing about) as it might cut down somewhat on our search. I have come across some of though that did come from Virginia, such as one Richard Allen. A name followed by a date in parenthesis was the date that person patented that parcel of land. Occasionally it might have meant the year he bought it. In the absence of entries, in most cases I did not deem a name significant enough to include. I have tried to use the columns as shown below but it was not always possible due to the length of some entries and spelling is generally as I found it. As I put this together, I found a number of double entries. This has come about from the information being found in more than one publication. This information is not always identical but I have tried to include the most informative. The use of ... at the end of a line and beginning of text is intended to continue a note or area while trying to keep it somewhat in its proper column. At times it is found in the transcripts when they did not include all the information. Somewhere in here I mention that I am sending a map. Actually, I send more than one. Two of them will appear to be the same, but careful examination will show that they are not. The names of some places are found on one and not the other, and visa versa. So you will need to look at all of them in your search for places. Unfortunately, many of the places we will be searching for cannot be found on any of them. I have found the “search” command to very useful in finding individuals, dates, and other information in this document as well as finding how often a particular name appears. Some abbreviations I have used at times: FO = former owner Men: = mentions CB: = chain bearer (had to do with surveying) (W)=will Wit:=witness Adj= adjacent $= indicates property was purchased* *At times I failed to note if property was purchased, consequently in the absence of a notation we cannot automatically conclude that a property was not purchased.
