BARBADOS.TXT [SET L/R MARGINS AT .5 INCH. We seem to have a few people that appear to have come from nowhere. One possibility is that a number of them may have come from Barbados. This was a stopping off place for many of the early settlers before they eventually arrived in America. I am sending a copy of explanation of this from Hotten's Omitted Chapters "Original Lists of Persons of Quality... and others who went from Great Britain to the American Plantations 1600-1700." I send this via US mail since I don't feel like typing it. The information contained is mostly lists but may give a hint as to some of the people we search. The volume I now take from, as indicated above, is the omitted chapters. Another earlier volume I will extract from later. I don't think I'll be able to check it out as I did this one (which is due back today). The following will be brevity but will give us some possibilities in the event that we can find these people nowhere else. It is a file we can place on a back burner and at some point check on ship's lists of persons arriving in America from Barbados (if such lists exist). Some of these may have no bearing whatsoever but will give an indication as to perhaps ones worth. From St. Phillip's Parish. Acct of Inhabitants in the parish Ano 1680. [In this company, an interesting note at bottom I include: It lists two men and has this comment: "Both are Apprentices to John Rodman and being Quakers most obstinately refuse to perform any military Duty whatsoever." From an earlier chapter, after totaling a list of burials he notes: "In all 35. What are buryed elsewhere by the Quakers & other persons I Know not." It would appear that the Quakers were not in conformity with the general population.] Under command of Capt Thomas Rawlins 1-6-1679. David Allen, John Browne, Richard Allen. Under command of Capt Vincent Dent 1-6-1679. Obitch Allin. [This could become lenghty and time consuming, so I will just list soldiers w/o units, etc unless it contains something pertinent. List of ye most Eminent Planters in Barbados in 1673: Coll. John Willoughby - 450 acres, he was also a member of the council. .............................................................. The lists of militia all appear to be between the years 1678 and 1680. Other names which appeared with some frequency that I did not abstract were: Gray, Griffin, West, Williams, Barnes, Stokes, and Johnson (or a variation, but not Johnston). I found no Catons or Suggs. The name Browne appears very often but we never see it as Brown. Several things I found odd or rather unusual was the presence of women, sometimes widows, named in the militia. I don't know what their purpose was unless it was to house and cook for the other soldiers. There appeared to be a rather large militia considering the size of Barbados. Another thing was that it made distinctions in regards to the men by referring to some of them as Mr. or Esq. Others might be shown as paupers, and some were referenced as Irishmen, Scotchmen, Jews, etc, or it might show their profession. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////
