Deacon John DUNHAM was once thought to be the ancestor of our DONHAMs. Now we can see that our lineage is from the SINGLETARY line. It is still possible, though, that we are descended from John, if indeed Mary SUTTON was the daughter of John SUTTON and Mary MARTIN.
John was born about 1588 in Scrooby, County Nottinghamshire, England. He was the son of Thomas DUNHAM and Jane BROMELY. Sources disagree about the exact connections of his ancestry, but most seem to show what is on the charts that appear here. Those who refused to see the facts regarding the SINGLETARYs probably liked this ancestry so much better because of Margaret STAFFORD, here shown as John's 4-greats-grandmother. Margaret was born about 1435 in Buckingham, England. She was the daughter of Duke Humphrey STAFFORD and Duchess Anne (DeNEVILLE) STAFFORD. Their ancestry, as that chart shows, went directly back to the kings and queens of Europe. The line continued back to William the Conqueror, Charlemagne, and other ancient lineages.

John DUNHAM was born ca. 1589 (age at death in 1668/69 was given as eighty). He was a Leiden Separatist who came to Plymouth between 1628 and 1632, probably with those who arrived from Holland in 1629 and 1630. A deacon in the Plymouth Church, he had married (1) Susanna KENNY, who died in Holland, and (2) Abigail BARLOW, daughter of Thomas in Leiden on 22 October 1622. He had three children by his first wife: John, Humility, and Thomas, and eight by his second wife: Samuel, Abigail, Persis, Jonathan, Hannah, Joseph, Benajah, and Daniel…. Isaac Watson DUNHAM's Deacon John Dunham of Plymouth, Mass., 1589-1669, and his Descendents (1907) is a very poorly written book, confusing, difficult to use, and often erroneous.
