 JOHN DONHAM |
Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. was not the very first of the DONHAMs, but he was one of the most important to us because he was the pioneer who went west from New Jersey. We are also descended from him three times once from his first wife Mary SUTTON, and twice from his second wife Keziah CROSLEY.
He was born in 1733 Woodbridge, Middlesex County, NJ.107 Previous books and histories say that he was the son of Nathaniel DONHAM Sr. and Joannah THORNELL. This was unlikely for two reasons. Nathaniel DONHAM Sr. was born in 1679, making him 54 when Nathaniel Jr. was born. Nathaniel DONHAM Sr. also already had a child named Nathaniel. This other Nathaniel DONHAM, who was born 17 October 1726, married an Elizabeth WILSON and moved to New York.
Brent SCHLOTTMAN, of Chandler, AZ, suggested on the Prodigy computer service in Fall 1994 that Nathaniel was actually the son of John DONHAM, and grandson of Nathaniel DONHAM Sr. Back then the title "Junior" only meant that there was someone older in town who had the same name, whether he was the father or not. John DONHAM, who was born in 1708, would have been of an appropriate age to be Nathaniel Jr.'s father. Also Nathaniel DONHAM Jr.'s oldest son's name was John It was a common tradition to name the oldest son after the grandfather. Brent also said that Isaac Watson DUNHAM's book gave a clue by saying that this John DONHAM went to Pennsylvania. We know that Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. went to Pennsylvania and could have taken his father with him. There is still no proof of this relationship, as Nathaniel could easily be the child of any of Nathaniel DONHAM Sr.'s other sons, but it seems to be the most likely one at this point.
Another history says that Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. was the third child of the second marriage of his father. Further, "[The father] was twice married in New Jersey. By his former wife there was born to him but one child, christened by name John. By the second marriage there were three sons and one daughter. The sons were William, Jonathan, and Nathaniel...."108 John DONHAM Jr., the book says, got his father's estate. Jonathan DONHAM married and stayed in New Jersey. William DONHAM moved to northern Alabama.
 SUTTON |
Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. married in 1765 to Mary SUTTON and had four children. Mary died and Nathaniel remarried to Keziah CROSLEY about 1773. They had six more children.
Nathaniel was in the American Revolution. One source said that he was a private out of New Jersey. He enlisted in the army as a Private in Matthias OGDEN's 1st Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line, on 4 February 1777, at Woodbridge, New Jersey, serving until 20 May 1783.
Another source gives his Revolutionary record as follows:109 Private, Captain MORRISON's Company, 1st Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line; enlisted at Woodbridge, New Jersey, April 4, 1777, for three years; deserted August 1, 1777; mustered, May 1778; transferred to Captain MEED's Company, 1st Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line; on rolls, January 1781; transferred to Captain Nathaniel LEONARD's Company, Colonel Matthias OGDEN's Regiment, New Jersey Continental Line; mustered May 20, 1783 by Colonel W. STEWART, Inspector of the Northern Army.
This desertion on 1 August 1777 makes sense because Nathaniel's son Abel DONHAM was born 19 August 1777. Nathaniel must have wanted to be at home with Keziah for the birth of their son. Nathaniel rejoined the war in May 1778.
 CROSLEY |
Sometime after Abel's birth and probably before the birth of the next child, the family moved to Washington County (Greene County), Pennsylvania. This would be where John DONHAM, possibly the father of Nathaniel DONHAM Jr., died, if indeed he went to Pennsylvania with his son. The rest of Nathaniel's children were born in Pennsylvania.
The Ohio histories say the following about Nathaniel DONHAM in Pennsylvania, "Nathaniel, as we are told, became an enterprising conductor of one of these then fast lines of transit, engaged in carrying in pack-saddles, lashed to horses, those necessary commodities through this long wilderness to his good people at their home in the woods. After a few years in the service, and having accumulated a little means, he emigrated still farther into the West, came down the Ohio River..."110 The Pennsylvania records show that there was a Nathaniel DONDEN who was a frontier ranger in Westmoreland (Washington, Greene) County, PA.111
"Nathaniel DUNHAM" purchased 215 acres of land in Washington County, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, in 1787. The cost was ten pounds per hundred acres. Interest was to commence on 1 March 1787. The deed was signed by the Honorable Charles BIDDLE, Esq., on 1 October 1787. The land included "an [unreadable] on the waters of Ten-mile Creek adjoining lands of James BELL and others". Three years later, on the 1790 U.S. Census of Washington County, Nathaniel DONHAM was listed with six sons under 16 years of age.
The Ohio history quoted above continues, "... he emigrated still farther into the West, came down the Ohio River with most of his family, and landed at the mouth of the Little Miami, A.D. 1794, twelve miles above Cincinnati. In a short time he made his way about twelve miles up that little stream, and established a home on what was then, and is still, known as the 'Round Bottom' of the Little Miami River." He was definitely in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, OH, by 1799 as he appears on the voters list there. He was also the first DONHAM of record in Clermont County, OH.112
Pete MANN, of Miami, FL, informed me by e-mail that in Ohio on 11 June 1805, "Nathaniel & Keziah (CROSLEY) DONHAM sold their land on Harner's Run, near Milford, to move 10 to 15 miles southeast near their son's. But their son Henry DONHAM and James & Abner ARTHUR moved from Harner's Run to Shaylor's Run near those mentioned above."
Nathaniel DONHAM Jr.'s will appears in Clermont County, OH in 1820.113 It was probated on 20 August 1820, so he probably died a short time before that. Following is the text of his will:
I give and bequeath to my wife Kezia one bed and furniture, two cows, one horse, her choise, sadel and bridel. & I give to my children: to my sons, David, Lewis, Henry, Able, Amos, Robert, & Jonathan one dollar each, and to have no more of my estate. I give to my daughter Mary one bed & I give my land to my son William with a reserve to my wife, as long as she lives. And as for the rest of my estate I give one half to my wife, and the other half to my son William to be divided as they see cause, & I do appoint my wife & my son William to be executors. & I do utterly disalow, revoke and disawill all and every other testament, will, and legacies executors by me willed or maid or decred. Rattafiing and confirming this & no other, to be my last will and testament, in witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty ninth day of September, one thousand eight hundred and twelve. Nathaniel DONHAM (seal). Witnesses: Jesse SEVERN, James ARTHUR, Joseph ARTHUR.
The four children of Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. and Mary SUTTON were John, David, Lewis, and Mary DONHAM. The histories and other prior genealogical materials claim that Mary was a daughter of Keziah CROSLEY instead of Mary SUTTON. They also say that there was an unknown daughter of Mary SUTTON who either died or never left New Jersey. It is my theory that Mary DONHAM was the female daughter of Mary SUTTON. Mary DONHAM was born 5 May 1774. The (female) DONHAM was born about 1773. Keziah CROSLEY was very young when she married Nathaniel DONHAM, so by saying that Mary DONHAM was a daughter of Mary SUTTON, that extends by two years the amount of time it would have to be before Mary SUTTON dies and Nathaniel marries Keziah. Also, one of Mary DONHAM's children was David Sutton LEE. Since most of her other children were named after close members of the family John, William Donham, Henry, Nathaniel, Jonathan, David, and Mary LEE it is possible that this David Sutton LEE was named after some relation of her mother, Mary SUTTON's family. It was common back then to name a daughter after the mother, but not a previous wife!
Mary SUTTON was the first wife of Nathaniel DONHAM Jr., and the mother of his first four children. They were married in 1765 New Jersey. I have not yet seen anything definitive on her ancestry, or even her parents. In the last half of 1994 I did lots of work on the SUTTON lines. Any SUTTON wife would have had to have been descended from George SUTTON who immigrated to America in 1634, probably through George's son William who moved to New Jersey. I traced as many descendents as I could through at least the end of the 1700s, trying to find a Mary SUTTON or a widow Mary SUTTON who might have been the wife of Nathaniel.
I have only found two possibilities, one more likely than the other. The unlikely one was a Marah "Mary" SUTTON, daughter of Rev. David SUTTON and Sarah TREMBLAY. Marah was born in 1728, five years before Nathaniel DONHAM, which wasn't very common. Also her mother Sarah, the daughter of Jean du TREMBLAY (son of Jean Jacques TREMBLES) and Mary NOE, was of French-Huguenot ancestry, an ethnicity never mentioned in any of the DONHAM histories. A point in favor of Marah is the name of her father. Mary DONHAM and Henry LEE's son David Sutton LEE might have been named after his grandmother's father.
The other possibility was Mary SUTTON, daughter of John SUTTON and Mary MARTIN. This Mary was born in about 1735, two years after Nathaniel. And she was born in Piscataway, Middlesex County, NJ, a neighboring town to Woodbridge. Although, one source did claim that she married an Elijah SMITH,114 son of Richard SMITH. I have not seen that fact written anywhere else.
There is another clue that this could be the correct Mary SUTTON. Looking through the old histories and genealogies, one finds that each source will say that the DONHAMs are descended from either the SINGLETARY line or the Deacon John DUNHAM line. The books never agree. If this were the correct Mary SUTTON, then both of them would be true. Mary SUTTON's maternal grandmother was Elizabeth DUNHAM, who was a great-granddaughter of Deacon John DUNHAM. The children of Nathaniel and Mary could have been told the SINGLETARY story by their father and the Deacon John story by their mother. They carried on whichever story they preferred or understood and their descendents passed that on to the written histories.
If this is the correct Mary SUTTON, one can see that far along her maternal line we would be descended from the FULLER family. Samuel FULLER came to America on the Mayflower with his parents Edmund FULLER and Ann. On 8 April 1635 in Scituate, Plymouth County, MA, at the home of James CUDWORTH, he was married by Miles STANDISH to Jane LATHROP, daughter of Reverend John LATHROP and Hannah HOWSE.
William SUTTON, possibly great-grandfather of our Mary SUTTON, was married to Damaris BISHOP, the daughter of Richard BISHOP and Alice MARTIN. Since this is far up on the paternal line of the SUTTONs, we would still be descended from him even if it was a different Mary SUTTON that Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. married. For example, Marah SUTTON is also descended from William.
Alice MARTIN was the daughter of Christopher MARTIN and Mrs. Marie PROWER. Christopher was the governor of the Mayflower, the representative from the Adventurers' Club who provided money for the voyage. The following is a description of him.115
He was a large, red faced man, self-important, pugnacious, fat and breathless, with a soup-stained shirt front. At the end of the journey he was a changed man having lost his good red color and such an amount of flesh his slovenly clothes hung loosely upon him, his face a sickly yellow, patched with scurfy areas. He was a lumbering boar and a bellowing bull worn down to a crying wreck before his death. Treasurer MARTIN's accounts were not in the best condition and he sent for John CARVER concerning them the day before he died on 1/18/1621.
Christopher's daughter Alice is a very fascinating ancestor. Alice MARTIN was married first to George CLARK, by whom she had two children, Abigail and Martha CLARK. She married second Richard BISHOP and had one daughter Damaris BISHOP. I've seen many short mentionings of the fact that she was a witch who was hung for the murder of her daughter. The most complete account that I've seen about the murder and the events afterwards was from WATERFORD's book:116
July 22, 1648, tragedy struck the young family. For reasons unknown to anyone, Alice killed four year old Martha CLARK. An inquiry into the death of little Martha was requested by Gov. William BRADFORD. The Committee formed included John HOWLAND, James HURTS, Robert LEE, Gyellis RICHARD, Richard SPARROW, Thomas POPE, Frances BILLINGTON, and William NELSON. Rachel, wife of John RAMSDEN, testified that she had entered the BISHOP house on an errand. Alice BISHOP asked her to fetch her some buttermilk from Goodwife WINSLOW and gave her a kettle. Before leaving the dwelling, however, she saw the child asleep on her bed. Alice appeared in a normal state of mind. When she returned, however, Alice was distraught and upon investigation, she found the body of the young girl, who had been killed with a sharp knife. At the time Alice did not seem to comprehend she had committed the act. At a Court held on Oct. 4, 1648, before Gov. BRADFORD, Miles STANDISH, and others, Alice confessed she had murdered her child and was sorry for it. She was found guilty by the Court and sentenced to be the "first person hanged in the colony." A Court also authorized John CHURCHILL to dispose of the house and land that belonged to George CLARK for the benefit of the remaining daughter Abigail....
Richard BISHOP not only had a problem of two small girls to raise, the notoriety of his wife being a murderer of her own child, but seemed to have his own problem of stealing other peoples' belongings. On March 6, 1649, in Plymouth, he was presented at court for stealing a neighbor's spade. He was found guilty and sentenced to both sit in stocks and replace the spade before the June Court or he would be whipped. He did not comply!! He had moved to Eastham, Mass., by 1654 and had tracts of land allotted to him but he still had his problems. In 1670 he entered George CRISP's property and helped himself to the fleece taken from the sheep. He was arraigned and ordered to pay thirty shillings which he did. Soon after this incident he sold his property to Capt. CHURCH and moved to Piscataway, New Jersey, to live with his only daughter Damaris and son-in-law William SUTTON.
William SUTTON's parents were George SUTTON and Sarah TILDEN. George came to America in 1634 from County Kent, England, on the ship Hercules. He was a servant to Nathaniel TILDEN and later married his daughter. In 1668, because of persecution of the Quakers, George SUTTON, his wife Sarah, and his children Joseph, Nathaniel, Sarah, and Elizabeth moved to Perquimans County, North Carolina.
After Mary SUTTON died, Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. remarried to Keziah CROSLEY who bore his last six children, all sons.
In 1994 I was part of an e-mail correspondence group on Prodigy concerning the CROSLEY / CROSSLEY lines. This group was unofficially led by Pete MANN, of Miami, FL, and also included Brian BROWN, Kirsten CROSSLEY, Hermon FAGLEY, and Bob ORR. We all did research and shared the new discoveries online, trading ideas and information as soon as we had them.117
We figure that Keziah CROSLEY might have been the daughter of John CROSLEY and Alice MALIN. But we do not yet have any proof of this. It just seems to be the most likely family because of the times and places. We had more luck uniting descendents of Reuben CROSLEY (m. Rachael HARVEY) and Abel CROSLEY (m. Joannah CAMPBELL) than the descendents of Charles CROSLEY (m. Hannah) through his son John. Pete MANN will probably publish a book someday showing all of our information on these lines.

Abel DONHAM married Elizabeth FERGUSON, daughter of Isaac FERGUSON and Elizabeth LEEDOM. Abel's brother Robert DONHAM married Elizabeth's sister Ruth FERGUSON. Thus the children of Abel and Robert were double first cousins to each other since they shared both sets of grandparents. Robert DONHAM and Ruth FERGUSON had eleven children:

The youngest child of Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. and Keziah CROSLEY was Jonathan Singleton DONHAM, born 16 February 1786. Jonathan married first Hila ROSS before 1809. He fought in the War of 1812. He married Elizabeth AYERS on 19 April 1818 in Clermont County, OH,129 and had eleven children. Jonathan died 21 September 1856 in Clermont County. As far as I know, Jonathan is also the only child of Nathaniel DONHAM Jr. for whom there exists a photograph. Looking at the photo, shown here, one can see the strong resemblance between Jonathan Singleton DONHAM and Ferdinand Lee DONHAM. Ferdinand should look like Jonathan after all, Jonathan is his granduncle and his half-granduncle at the same time.
The will of Jonathan S. DONHAM (of Clermont County, OH) is in Vigo County will Book 1, page 94, dated 10 February 1855, and recorded 5 October 1859. An abstract shows that it lists daughter Elizabeth Caroline DONHAM, daughter Harriett DONHAM, daughter Eliza Mary DONHAM, daughter Hiley Ann DONHAM, daughter Florilla Jane DONHAM, daughter Eveline DONHAM, son Perry Jackson DONHAM, son Harrison Layfeett DONHAM, son Erasmus Johnathan DONHAM, and son Robert Warren DONHAM. Executors were Perry Jackson DONHAM and Leafeitte DONHAM. Witnesses were Robert F. WATKINS, Wm. HOBSON, and Nathan LAYCOCK.
