George RECTOR, father of John Preston RECTOR, was born in 1769 in Fauquier County, Virginia. He was probably the son of John RECTOR and Catherine RECTOR, but that has not been proven. Whatever his parentage, he was certainly descended from Hans Jacob RICHTER (name anglicized to John Jacob RECTOR) who came to Virginia Colony from Germany in 1714. John Jacob was born in 1674 in Trupbach, Westphalia, Nassau-Siegen, Germany. He married 17 January 1711 to Anna Elizabeth FISHBACK, daughter of Philipp FISCHBACH and Elisabeth HEIMBACH. The RECTORs and several other families started the Germanna Colony. They were iron-ore workers, invited to America by the governor of Virginia, Alexander SPOTSWOOD.87 John Jacob RECTOR died before 7 August 1729 in Germantown, Fauquier County, VA.
George RECTOR married on 21 May 1792 in Montgomery County, VA, to Nancy Ann ATKINS, born 1770-1775, daughter of Millitan ATKINSON88 and Mary FRY. Some books, such as the one by Ronnie ADKINS, claim that Millitan ADKINS and Mary FRY had only one known child, Parker Milliton ADKINS.89 The record shown here is Nancy's marriage record to George RECTOR. It says, "... George RECTOR hath this day attained license for his marriage with Nancy ATKINSON, daughter of Millitan ATKINSON of this County...." It was signed by Millitan ATKINSON and George RECTOR. This shows that Nancy was indeed another child of Millitan.90
Millitan ATKINSON was a soldier in the American Revolution. He served in the Virginia Militia prior to, during, and after the war. He was in Captain Daniel SMITH's company of Fincastle Militia in 1776. He served as Sergeant during the war and was appointed Ensign in 1794. His name is on the Monument to Revolutionary War solders of Giles County, along with his father and brother Hezekiah. He was also in the company of Captain John LUCAS. Family legend says that he fought some battles of the French & Indian War also. On 7 October 1794 he qualified as an officer — Ensign of the 86th Regiment. He had also been appointed to be a minute man. He and George FRY Jr., Charles LUCAS, et al, had to "ride to warn or defend the Sinking Creek settlers on a minute's notice."
Millitan ATKINSON was the son of Parker V. and Mary ADKINS. Mary's maiden name is unknown, though it might possibly be LITTLEBERRY or FRY.91 Parker's middle initial V was used as his mark on signatures. According to family legend, the V stood for Vincent, but there is no proof of this. Parker was also in the American Revolution. He participated in the 1773 Battle of Point Pleasant, which some consider the first battle of the Revolutionary War.
Parker was the son of William V. ADKINS and Elizabeth PARKER. They were married on Friday 17 January 1716 at the "now-famous" St. John's Church in Richmond, Henrico County, Virginia.92 The ADKINS and FRY families intermarried with the Powhatan Indians of Virginia,93 yet it is not known if they are a part of the ancestry of Nancy (ATKINS) RECTOR.
William ADKINS, born 1690 Charles City, Henrico County, VA, was the son of either Thomas ADKINS or John ADKINS who were from southerwestern England originally (counties Wessex, Essex, and Sussex). Thomas and John, probably brothers, both had sons named William who married Elizabeths. William ADKINS' wife, Elizabeth PARKER, was the daughter of Richard and Mitha PARKER.
George FRY, maternal grandfather of Nancy ATKINS, was also in the American Revolution, also a member of Captain John LUCAS' company. He was married to Margaret SCOTT and to Annie ABBOTT (daughter of Richard ABBOTT). Annie ABBOTT was married firstly to David JOHNSON by whom she had a daughter Annie JOHNSON. Annie JOHNSON married her step-brother George FRY Jr. (previously married to Kiziah MALORY), son of George FRY and Margaret SCOTT. George and Margaret also had children Mary (m. Millitan ATKINSON), Katherine (m. Isaac ELY), Barbara (m. John ELY), and Susannah FRY (m. BYARS).
George RECTOR and Nancy Ann ATKINS' eldest child John Preston RECTOR was born in Virginia where the family lived in Montgomery / Giles County. They then moved west to Grainger / Claiborne County, TN, where they had more children. They moved again to Preble and Miami Counties, Ohio, where the last of the children were born. They had twelve children. George RECTOR moved again to Vigo County, Indiana. Nancy (ATKINS) RECTOR died sometime between 1830 and 1840. In 1839 George RECTOR went even further west with three sons and a daughter to Buchanan County, Missouri. He died in 1844 and is buried at King Hill Cemetery, St. Joseph, Buchanan County, Missouri. His daughter Deborah RECTOR is buried beside him and his son James Monroe RECTOR is also known to be buried there.
