CHAPTER ELEVEN
THE BALL, BROWN, and ARTHUR FAMILIES

Abijah DONHAM and Margaret DONHAM were both great-grandchildren of Thomas BROWN and Mary Osborn BALL. According to the histories, Thomas BROWN was born 27 May 1730 in Cardiganshire, Wales. He married in 1754 Welshneck, PA, to Mary Osborn BALL.45 Thomas BROWN was a private in the Virginia Continental Line in the American Revolution.46 He died 27 September 1818 in Bethel, Clermont County, OH. Abijah DONHAM is a grandson of Thomas BROWN's daughter Rachel BROWN (m. James ARTHUR Jr.). Margaret DONHAM is a granddaughter of Thomas BROWN's son George BROWN (m. Margaret Rebecca CONRAD).

[1] Family legend says that Mary Osborn BALL was a cousin of Mary BALL, wife of Augustine WASHINGTON and mother of President George WASHINGTON. The children of Melvin Roy DONHAM remember being told they are related to Martha (DANDRIDGE) WASHINGTON.47 It appears that the relations to the WASHINGTON families is through the BROWN and BALL ancestries.

Though there is scarce documentary evidence, relatives in the 1800s claimed that Mary Osborn BALL was the daughter of Willliam BALL and Mary WHITE, and the sister of Joseph BALL. William BALL was the son of Colonel William BALL and Hannah ATHEROLD, great-grandparents of President George WASHINGTON. The following chart shows the relations:

About 1821, Joseph BALL, brother of Mary Osborn BALL, died in Philadelphia. He had no heirs and many relatives tried to make a claim to his fortune and estates, the DONHAMs included:48

For a number of years the officials of Philadelphia have been searching for the lawful heirs to the large landed "Ball Estate" in that city which has been exempt from taxes for 100 years, as it was held in trust by a church organization. There have been from time to itme numerous claimants to the estate but as yet none has been able to satisfactorily establish legal lineage as the direct descendents from William, the original owner, who died in 1737.

J.S. DONHAM, of Cory, Clay County, Indiana, and W.R. FITZWATER of Mulberry, Clermont County, Ohio, both claiming to be among the direct heirs to the estate and who for the past 2 years have been making a search for all the other heirs, have visited Philadelphia and personally examined the records there. They are confident that they, with others, from legal advice, are the only lawful heirs to the real estate in Philadelphia of the value of millions of dollars, as the direct descendents of Mary BALL. Proceedings, it is said, will be instituted at an early day by these claimants for possession of the property, and later for the possession of the large estate of the son of Joseph BALL, deceased.

Mr. DONHAM and Mr. FITZWATER were here recently and each secured affidavits from the heirs to be used in proof of their claims.

Joseph F. BROWN "Uncle Joe" of the county clerks office is a direct heir, and one of the nearest of kin, his grandmother having been the daughter of William BALL and the sister of Joseph BALL, the millionaire, when he died in 1821. Besides "Uncle Joe" there are in this city several of the heirs of his brothers William J. and Ryland T. BROWN, and of his sisters, Hannah NASH, Annie ELISTUM, Susannah TINGLEY, and Mary NICHOL.

The land that these heirs of William BALL will take legal proceedings to secure immediate possession of lies wholly within the city of Philadelphia and consists of the "Hope Farm" of 485 acres in the Northern Liberties, 100 acres on the Southampton road, 84 acres on Malbrooke creek (707 acres in all) and 26 improved lots in other parts of said city.

Mary BALL, through whom the heirs claim, intermarried with Thomas BROWN at Philadelphia in 1754 and soon removed to Hardy County, Virginia (now West Virginia) thence to Kentucky in 1787 and to Ohio in 1800 where she died in 1816, leaving seven married children, the descendents of whom are now the heirs, and the only heirs, to the said "Ball Brown Estate". Her brother Joseph BALL, died at Philadelphia in 1821, childless and without a will, one of the wealthiest men at the time in Pennsylvania and his vast estate, it is said, has never been legally settled. The descendents of his sister, Mary Ball BROWN, are also the only heirs to that estate, as well as to the property of her father said William BALL, in the city of Philadelphia.

The following is a small part of a letter written by Joseph F. BROWN, son of George BROWN, to his niece Miss Oma S. CORD, dated 7 Aug 1796:49

My father, George BROWN, was a soldier in the ar of the Revolution and was present at the surrender of Lord CORNWALLIS in 1781, he was also in all the Indian Wars and in the war of 1812. He died in 1825.

As to the "Ball - Brown Estate", I am satisfied there is a large unsettled estate legally belonging to the heirs of my Grandmother, Mary Ball BROWN, who married my Grandfather, Thomas BROWN in Philadelphia in 1754, moved to Virginia soon after, to Kentucky in 1786, and to Ohio in 1800, where she died in 1816. She was a sister of Joseph BALL, who died in Philadelphia in 1821 without children or a will, then one of the richest men in Pennsylvania. He visited my Grandmother about 1811, in Clermont County, Ohio. But the trouble is there is no written record or evidence of the fact, that she was a sister, and only oral testimony which I fear will not be sufficient to sustain our claim as heirs.

John Singleton DONHAM, son of Abijah DONHAM and Margaret DONHAM, and great-great-grandson (through two lines) of Mary Osborn BALL, was very active in trying to find evidence for this claim. Bob ORR, of Burlington, IA, wrote the following short note:50

John Singleton DONHAM was very instrumental in contacting relatives re the BALL estate. I think he died a man with little money, and in the end sold most of his library to pay expenses. He apparently was divorced (I believe partly because of his obsession with the BALL fortune). He was a contributor to the founding of Cory, IN, was was a schoolteacher, postmaster, etc. See the SAILOR and George BROWN compilations as they have references to the BALL estate. If you have not seen the BALL estate book by KNISLEY (sp?), you ought to review it. It contains a list of all relatives of Joseph BALL, including a few descendants of Joseph SAILOR and wife, nee BROWN. The SAILOR connection was through an aunt of Joseph BALL who married a HOLLAWAY or HALLOWAY. During the later part of the 1800's, the BALL estate was an active topic among our relatives.

[2] George BROWN, maternal grandfather of Margaret DONHAM, was born 22 June 1760 in Hardy County, West Virginia.52 Back then it was known as Hampshire County, Virginia. He served as sergeant in the Revolutionary War in Captain J. VALENTINE's Co., 1st Virginia Regiment, commanded by Colonel George GIBSON. George BROWN was a soldier in both HARRISON's and ST. CLAIR's defeats, and at WAYNE's victory. He served for three years in Colonel GIBSON's regiment. Both he and his father Thomas BROWN were present at the surrender of Lord CORNWALLIS at Yorktown on 18 October 1781. Later, George BROWN fought in the War of 1812.

A Virginia land warrant was issued to him, signed by Governor Patrick HENRY, on 19 March 1783. On 8 March 1786 he married Margaret Rebecca CONRAD, daughter of John CONRAD.53 They had six daughters before "Peggy" died about 1802 at Cabbin Creek, Mason (now Lewis) County, KY. George remarried 4 October 1804 to Hannah JOHN, daughter of John JOHN and Barbara EVANS. Hannah was born December 1783 in Uwchlan, Chester County, PA. They had four sons and one daughter. Joseph Franklin "Uncle Joe" BROWN, son of George BROWN and Hannah JOHN, wrote the previously quoted letter about the BALL estate. The following biography tells about him and his ancestors:55

... The family is of pure Celtic stock, and originated in Wales. The American founders of the family were four brothers who came from Cardigan, Wales, in 1746, in the ship Fidelity, which landed at Welsh Neck, near Philadelphia, not far from Valley Forge. One of these brothers settled in Wilmington, North Caroline; another in Boston; and a third in Brownsville, PA, the birthplace of James G. BLAINE. They spelled the name BROUNE, which was the old way of spelling it in Wales.

Thomas BROWN, grandfather of Joseph F., was one of the original four brothers who came to America, and at the time of coming was aged about fifteen years. He followed the occupation of farming. He married Mary BALL, sister of Joseph BALL, who was the wealthiest man then living in Pennsylvania. She was born in Philadelphia, and was first cousin to Mary WASHINGTON, mother of George WASHINGTON, who sent her a book and always recognized the relationship. After marriage, they settled in 1755 in Hardy County, VA, and lived there until 1786, when Mr. BROWN removed with his family to Kentucky, and lived there until about 1800, when he moved to Clermont County, Ohio, where he died in 1818, aged ninety years. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War serving three years. He was over age when he enlisted, and served in the same command with his son, George, and with the maternal grandfather of our subject [which would be John JOHN]. He was at the defeat and surrender of Lord CORNWALLIS in 1781. One of his daughters married Major SODOUSKI of Count PULASKI's Polish army in the Revolution.

George BROWN, father of Joseph ., was born in Hardy County, VA. He enlisted at the age of seventeen years as a soldier in the continental army, serving three years, and was present at the siege of Yorktown and the surrender of Lord CORNWALLIS. He removed to Kentucky with his father in 1786 [in which year he married his first wife Margaret Rebecca CONRAD], and they lived in a stockade fort to protect themselves from Indians. He was in General ST. CLAIR's army, and was in the battle of Fort Recovery at ST. CLAIR's defeat. In 1790 he was in General HARMON's army, and in 1794 in General WAYNE's army, being at Fort Wayne when General WAYNE received the surrender of the Indians, under Little Turtle. He took part in the battle of Tippecanoe — Joe DAVIS's regiment — in which the captain of his company was killed, and he was with Colonel Dick JOHNSON in the march to the river Thames in Canada. The regiment was surprised at the river Raisin by Tecumseh, and they did not reach the river Thames, where that noted Indian was killed. Tecumseh was an educated man and a Mason of high degree. He saved the life of George BROWN in battle, who gave the Masonic signal of distress. George BROWN married Hannah JOHN, born in Westmoreland County, PA, daughter of John and Mahala (EVANS) JOHN. John JOHN and his wife were both of Welsh stock, and were both born in Cardigan, Wales. John JOHN served throughout the war of the Revolution and was the larges man (seven feet tall and weighed 275 pounds) in General WASHINGTON's army, and was with him in all his battles. In 1808 George BROWN settled in Clermont County, Ohio, and in April 1821 he removed to Rush County, Indiana, settling in Richland Township. He died there and was buried in September 1825. The United States Government has marked his grave as that of a Revolutionary soldier....

Clarence Charles "Ducky" NASH, son of Everett Oakley NASH and Katherine JACOBY, was a 3-greats-grandson of George BROWN and Margaret Rebecca CONRAD through their daughter Hannah BROWN (m. Thomas NASH). Ducky NASH has done the voice of Donald DUCK in the Walt DISNEY cartoons since 1934.

[3] Rachel BROWN, paternal grandmother of Abijah DONHAM, was the daughter of Thomas BROWN and Mary Osborn BALL, and sister of George BROWN. She was born at 2:00 p.m. on 20 December 1762 in Moorefield, Hardy County, West Virginia (Hampshire County, Virginia).

Rachel BROWN married James ARTHUR Jr., son of James McARTHUR and Hannah STUART. James McARTHUR Sr. was born in 1730 in Glasgow, Scotland. Family legend says that he came to America as a stowaway, hiding out in a barrel on the ship. He was a weaver and fought in the American Revolution. His family dropped the "Mc" part of McARTHUR, changing the name to ARTHUR.
