CHAPTER FOUR
GENEVIEVE MIGNON DONHAM & ALFRED WILLIAM DeLUCCHI

[4] Genevieve Mignon DONHAM was the youngest child of Melvin Roy and Rose Marie (HEIM) DONHAM. She was born 6 April 1921 in San Francisco, CA. When she was six years old, the family moved to Petaluma, Sonoma County. She went to McKinley School, Washington Grammar School, Petaluma Junior High School, and Petaluma High School (Class of 1939).

During junior high school Gen was a member of a group of girls who called themselves the S.D.D. Club, the Secret Dames Dramatics. Every weekend they would meet together, each time at somebody else's house. They had initiations for new members and minutes were kept at each meeting. They would write to movie stars and collect their autographed pictures, pretending to be that star for a month. Shirley CHANDLER's parents owned a soda fountain, so once in a while they would go there for drinks. There were about twelve members. Besides Gen, there was also Althea LARSEN (now TORLIATT), Doris RIEWERTS (Althea's cousin, ANDERSON), Ellen WOODFORD, Dorothy BAKER (later she was mysteriously murdered), Margaret HENRICKSON (SAMBUCK), Marie ELLIS (SALZON), Betty GRAVES, Anita PETERSON (ELLIS, married Marie's brother), Joy THOMPSON (RAVEN), Shirley CHANDLER (GRAVES). By high school the group had broken apart and Genevieve became best friends with Hildegarde KURTENBACK (now SABACA).

When she was a teenager ,Genevieve was often riding on the floats in the Egg and Butter Day Parades. The Petaluma Historical Society has several pictures of her holding chickens and rabbits or riding a huge chicken float. In 1937 she was on the Sonoma County float in the parade that went across the newly-completed Golden Gate Bridge. She wore a costume made out of chicken-feathers and waved to the crowds. The 30 October 1994 issue of The Press Democrat had an article that showed a 1930s picture of Genevieve sitting atop one of the plaster chicken statues, a landmark that had recently been struck by vandals.

On 21 January 1940, when she was eighteen years old, Genevieve married Alfred William DeLUCCHI at what is now called the Open Door Christian Church, in Petaluma. The ceremony was witnessed by Virginia (DONHAM) CHIOINO, of Petaluma, and Fabian BOBO, of Ignacio. Their wedding reception was at Hermann Sons Hall.

The "Time Exposure" from the Marin Independent Journal (8 January 1995, page C2), is a picture of The Meadows from around 1978. The Meadows was a bar located in Novato (Ignacio), Marin County. Today there is a Shell gas station standing at that spot. Between about 1937 and 1955 the Meadows was run by Alfred William DeLUCCHI and Genevieve Mignon (DONHAM) DeLUCCHI (only while she was married to Al in the early 1940s). Genevieve remembers getting up early every morning to open the bar at 6:00 in the morning. She usually worked the first half of the day and Al worked the second half, closing the bar that night. They lived in the rooms upstairs. At one time, these rooms were occupied by Al's sister and brother-in-law Stella and Edmund PODESTA. The bar was busiest on days when the men at nearby Hamilton Air Force Base got their paychecks. Frank GALLI and his father ran Galli's Restaurant next door. He would close early on those days to help out at the bar.

Alfred William DeLUCCHI was born 2 July 1915 in Novato. He was the son of Ferdinand DeLUCCHI and Laura SOLARI. His father, who was known as "Fred", was the Novato town constable. He was well-known for giving out speeding tickets. He would wait beside the highway in his white Mercer and catch the San Franciscans speeding on their way north for the weekend. He would take the culprits to Judge RUDOLFF at the Novato French Cheese Factory (owned by the judge) where they would be fined $5 and given a box of cheese.19 Frank GALLI says that the Old Town section of Novato was paved with the fines that Ferdinand DeLUCCHI collected! Frank also said that Ferdinand, "literally put Novato on the map". Novato was a very small town back then and one could pass it without even noticing. But, after awhile, everybody going north knew about Novato and the speeding tickets from Ferdinand DeLUCCHI.

Jackie MOORE, a Novato historian, said that at Halloween the children used to like "to devil him". They would be up to trouble at one end of the street, attracting Ferdinand over there. Once he shooed them away, other kids would be doing things at the opposite end of the street. They would do this repeatedly. Ferdinand was a member of the Novato Masonic Club. He became a Steward of their Lodge of Instruction when it was begun in May 1923. Many remember his limp that was the result of some accident.

Ferdinand was the son of Augustino DeLUCCHI and Maria OLIVERI. He had siblings: Frederico Augustino (also known as "Fred") DeLUCCHI, Mary NAVE, Julia PEZZI, Sarah ROSSI, Virginia VALLE, Colorinda SOLARI, and Adele DENTONI. They were all from the small town of Barese Ligure, in Genoa, Italy. The father, Augustino, immigrated to either New York or San Francisco first, and worked there for awhile. He then returned to Italy with the money he had earned. He did this several times before he had enough money to bring the rest of the family to the United States. His wife Maria did not want to go to America and died in Italy. Most of the family went to Stockton, California, while Ferdinand DeLUCCHI and Mary (DeLUCCHI) NAVE went to Novato. Mary NAVE's descendents were also prominent in Novato. She married Pasquale PIETRONAVE, also of Italy, who had changed his name to Peter NAVE. Their children were Louis J., Fred, William F., Katherine, and Mollie NAVE. Fred NAVE was elected as Novato constable, replacing his uncle Ferdinand DeLUCCHI. William NAVE and now his children own the Nave Shopping Center area where Nave Drive and Nave Bowling Lanes are located.

Augustino, who was the son of Dominick DeLUCCHI, had a sister named Rosinga DeLUCCHI and a brother John DeLUCCHI who came to America also. Rosinga had children Mamie OLIVIA (m. Frank PODESTA) and John OLIVIA (m. Annie). John DeLUCCHI married Louise BURRONI (daughter of Pietro BURRONI and Teresa) and had eight children: Peter, Lydia, Charles, Linda (m. Al MILLIKIN, parents of Daisy MILLKIN who married James BARRY), Tessie, Frank, and Stella DeLUCCHI (m. Al MILLIKIN, parents of Al MILLIKIN Jr. who married Karen DUNLAP). Many of their descendents are also in this area.

Two of Augustino's children married SOLARIs. Ferdinand married Laura SOLARI and Colorinda married Louis SOLARI. Laura and Louis were children of Stefano SOLARI and Carmelita SOLARI. There were also siblings: Edith, Louise, and Frank SOLARI. Laura and Ferdinand had three children: Alfred William, Stella, and Lena DeLUCCHI. Lena (who married Frank CARRARO) believes that Carmelita's maiden name was also SOLARI and that she and Stefano were distant cousins.

Alfred and Genevieve had one daughter, Sharon Rose DeLUCCHI, born 16 June 1942 in Ross, Marin County, CA. After Al and Genevieve divorced, they each remarried a couple of times. Al married twice, to a woman named Janette and another named Margaret. About 1950 Al DeLUCCHI got into an accident when he drove off the road at Black Point, Novato, Marin, CA. He had a stroke and concussion which put him into a coma for three months. A male nurse and a Sister KENNY worked with him and said they'd be able to bring him back in about a month. Everybody thought it was a miracle when they did. In the coma Al could see and hear everything around him but could not react to any of it. He died sixteen years later, 1 July 1966 in San Rafael, Marin County, CA.
